Paul Theodore “Ted” Serfass

Ted hailed from King of Prussia, PA and served 30 years active duty as a highly decorated Surface Warfare Officer including command of USS Nichols (FFG-47) and USS Lake Champlain (CG-57). Following retirement, he continued service in various Navy Doctrine development assignments. Ted played Navy Rugby for 3 years starting at flanker his junior and senior years. He was selected to the All Potomac and all Eastern Rugby Union teams (before All Service or All American teams were established). He captained the 1974 team to a 20-1 record and the team received an invitation to play in the College Rugby National Invitational Tournament. Ted continued playing rugby for Coronado Rugby Club in Coronado CA and started for a select Navy team that played in England during Queen Elizabeth’s Silver Jubilee in 1977. He continued contributing to the national rugby community as a high level referee for 20 years including many All Service Rugby tournaments. Ted passed away in 2025.
