LT James Surch, USN

Class of 1977

LT James Surch originally from Lompoc, CA was killed in action as a result of a suicide bombing in Beirut on October 23, 1983 while serving as the Naval Gunfire Liaison Officer.  Jim led the 1977 rugby team in scoring as a winger and was an inspirational leader.  Jim was a highly respected teammate who left a lasting impression on generations to follow.  In 2009, Jim was inducted into the Lompoc HS Hall of Fame and since 1983, Lompoc HS has been awarding the Jim Surch Memorial Award for Courage.
