The 1972 Team played in the first sanctioned National Collegiate Invitational Rugby Championship Tournament, losing a close match to Palmer College in the championship game after winning their first 3 games. The 1972 team dominated throughout the fall and spring, winning the East Coast Championship and attaining a 34-1 record. Additionally, the 1972 team beat an international world touring side from Wales that had been undefeated for three years. This match was featured on ABC’s Wide World of Sports. The 1972 team’s extraordinary success and national recognition continued a standard for Navy Rugby.
